Check the Device Manager and if that doesn't do any good, follow these steps:
-> Click START, and go to "RUN"
-> type "DXDIAG" in the RUN box (without quotations of course) and click OK
-> In the new window that pops up, click the "SOUND" tab and it should say the name of your soundcard.
Once you figure out what Soundcard it is, go to GOOGLE and search for that particular soundcard, and you *SHOULD* be able to find the company's webpage as well as software/drivers for that soundcard so that you can install them and hopefully get it working again.
Also double check to make sure that your volume isn't muted for some odd reason (although I'm sure you've already done this.)

Don't forget to check your speaker wire in the back of the speakers or the computer, it seems like those can sometimes get pulled just the slightest and you go into silence mode
I'm sure you done checked that, but you would be amazed at how often its the simplest things
